“I WORKED IN AUSTRALIA FOR 3 MONTHS AND TRAINED SOME OF THESE HORSES MYSELF AS WELL AS COMPETED AT CAMPDRAFTING EVENTS ON THEM.
I HOPE THIS WORKS OUT FOR YOU AS I THINK THEY ARE AN INCREDIBLE ANIMAL AND VERY DURABLE!”

—Kim Dampier, Western Horse Review

So why did the McArthur family choose to import the Australian Stock Horse breed when Canada already possesses many well bred quality horses? It all began when they were first introduced to the ASH breed as competitors/riders during the inaugural Polocrosse World Cup event in 2003.

Since that time the family was interested in the breed and began researching the possibility and significance of importing the Australian Stock Horse into Canada. During a second visit to Australia it was clear that this breeds versatility and performance, combined with the breeds mild temperament, ride ability and lack of hereditary health concerns would be a breed that would be well received in North America by all levels of riders and competitors. Research process began into specific pedigree and breeders followed by the importation of their foundation breeding stock to their home located near the picturesque Rocky Mountains, home of the Calgary Stampede and Spruce Meadows in Alberta, Canada.

Their research continues into the Australian Stock Horse breed and pedigrees guiding them to import horses that will not only represent the breed well but will also provide the marketplace with a quality ASH stud’s offering out cross potential for existing well bred horses available throughout North America. The foundation horses have an unmistakable combination of traits including; a quiet trainable temperament, versatile size (14. 3 – 15.2hh), refined eye appeal, natural agility, stamina, hardiness and a natural cow ability. Founding belief that these horses will offer value to other equine breeders who also value similar attributes; to be gained or sustained through out-crosses with proven performance Australian Stock Horse studs.

McArthur Stud Farm facility and breeding program includes short and long term plans to promote, support and encourage the growth of the breed in Canada and North America. Complimenting existing horse breeders programs within Canada and North America with the same or similar breeding goals.

For the immediate future, the focus involves responsible breeding and development of the Australian Stock Horse throughout North America. Horses that are true to the breeds Standards of Excellence showing horses within both the Working Cow Horse events and FEI events. Each year the farm will be able to offer a limited number of purpose bred performance horses for sale. As passionate supporters of the ASH breed and in an effort to support outside breeders McArthur Stud Farm also offers access to proven performance genetics to select supreme quality ASH studs and embryo transfers from their imported foundation ASH mares.
